Fees and Money Matters

Within the International Office, we have a great deal of experience of working with International Students and as such we understand how much of an investment it is to study in the UK. We are also aware that at first it can be difficult to manage your finances accordingly when moving to a different country. We therefore want to ensure that you have the most detailed and accurate information regarding all the costs which you may encounter during your time in Cardiff.

You should ensure that you have enough money to pay for your fees and your living expenses for the whole of your course at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Any earnings from part time work should be seen as additional spending money and should not be factored into your budget for course fees or accommodation fees.
Please also bear in mind that you will be unable to obtain any money from the University or any other UK organisations once you arrive. UK visa authorities in most countries will ask to see proof that you have the necessary finances to cover food and living expenses before you can be granted a visa.

Like all other UK universities, all academic and accommodation fees must be paid in full to the University whilst you are studying with us. If you do not do this you will be unable to graduate from your course or gain a certificate for your studies. However it is possible to pay your fees in instalments if you are not able to pay them in full when you begin your course.

Foundation Years/ Year 0 Courses

Foundation years are a great option if you have the talent, ambition and potential to thrive at Birmingham City University but want a little more flexibility and choice than a standard degree.

Foundation years (sometimes called Year 0 courses) are perfect if you who don’t meet the entry requirements for a particular degree course, as they will enable you to develop your learning to an appropriate standard in preparation for the first year of the degree.
Most of our undergraduate courses now have a foundation pathway, to help you on your journey to your dream course.

Why study a degree with a foundation year:

If you want the flexibility of a year’s study on a more general course to find out the best degree choice for you.
If you have changed your mind about your career since you chose your A-levels or BTECs and need to improve your skills in a different subject area.
If you would like extra time and support to help you build your knowledge, skills and confidence before starting a full degree.
If you don’t quite meet our entry requirements but know you have the potential to succeed at university

Foundation degrees

If your qualifications are slightly below those required for direct entry onto a Bachelor’s degree, Foundation degrees may offer an alternative route to a full undergraduate degree.

They are often vocational courses and are normally equivalent to the first two years of a three-year Bachelor’s degree. After completing a Foundation degree, you may be able to take a ‘top-up’ Bachelor’s degree to gain the full undergraduate degree qualification. Our Foundation degrees include Early Years, ICT and Health and Social Care.

Bachelor's degree

This is a full undergraduate degree qualification. Bachelor’s degrees normally take three or four years to complete on a full-time basis – they can also be studied part-time.

Bachelor’s degrees can have different award titles depending on the subject and nature of the course.

Bachelor of Science (BSc): qualifications have a particular scientific approach.

Bachelor of Arts (BA): qualifications are often more arts and humanities focused.

Bachelor of Education (BEd): courses are a particular type of teacher training degree course, but there are also BA courses which lead to Qualified Teacher Status.

Bachelor of Law (LLB): courses are qualifying law degrees aimed at those who wish to become solicitors or barristers.
Most Bachelor’s degrees can be studied ‘with honours’ – depicted in the award title as BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), etc. The honours element indicates a higher level of academic achievement.

Bank Account

As an international student, you’ll normally be offered a basic bank current account with a cash card so you can withdraw cash from ATM machines.
Having a UK bank account is essential if you’re studying in the UK for more than six months. We recommend you look into what each bank can offer before selecting an account.
Banks are usually open between 09:00 and 17:00 hours on weekdays, and 09:30 and 12:00 hours on Saturdays

Documents needed to open a bank account:

Passport
Letter of enrolment confirming your UK and home address (available after enrolment from the Faculty Course Office).
Your University unconditional offer letter that you received at your home residential address (the bank is looking for evidence that the university has corresponded with you at your place of residence).

Your University or private accommodation contract for your term-time accommodation.
A recent bank statement or credit card statement from Zyour home bank translated in to English and containing your residential address (the statement must be less than three months old).

UK banks operate careful checks on each application before opening an account and you may have to wait for a couple of weeks before your account is opened.
Because of this, we suggest you bring around £300 in cash and a further £300 in travellers cheques to cover you for the first month.
We also strongly advise students to take out travel insurance in case you lose any money or personal documents, or face travel delays.
If you’re bringing a bankers draft with you, it should be in sterling and drawn on a UK bank so that you can avoid unnecessary delays in accessing your money.

London School of Commerce

Our students are able to immerse themselves into the inspiring historical and cultural legacy that London has to offer from LSC’s location at London Bridge, whilst acquiring advanced knowledge and skills in modern business management in the world’s financial centre.

LSC delivers a range of well-established business and management programmes with its University partners, including undergraduate programmes and postgraduate programmes leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. Since LSC’s establishment in 1998, it has expanded on a global scale, which is underpinned with campuses in Valetta in Malta, Colombo in Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Dhaka in Bangladesh. LSC has achieved national, international and global success through the delivery of life-long learning, widening participation in education for innovation and entrepreneurship and seeking to develop a global mind-set in its learners.

East meets West: LSC has various campuses globally, in Europe and Asia, where students of different cultures meet. These campuses are international colleges for ideas, developing critical thinking and building on imagination, leading to learning for innovation and implementation. We ask students to investigate new world-views and to look at familiar problems from fresh perspectives. We help students to develop their entrepreneurial skills to enable them to become successful global competitors.

Student-Centeredness: Students are at the heart of everything we do. We value close faculty-student interaction, high standards for students, and a supportive learning environment. The most important outcomes from LSC’s campuses are educational success leading to student employability. Global and local engagement: LSC is proud of its students creating global impact through LSC Connect, which links up over 30,000 graduates as global alumni. LSC’s mission is not only to develop our students into well-educated global citizens, but also for them to serve as an economic, social, and cultural catalyst around the world on graduation. Our Mission

At LSC, we are committed to ensuring a conducive and enriching learning environment for all stakeholders and that the educational provision within the school contributes directly to the educational, economic and cultural development of the host country in which programmes are delivered and in the home countries from which students originate.

Application Requirements

Students are advised to apply well in advance of the course commencement date as courses tend to be oversubscribed. You should also leave adequate time for the processing of your visa application, confirmation of accommodation and other formalities.

To gain admission to degree courses conducted at the London School of Commerce (LSC), the following documents are required:
Completed application form duly signed by the applicant (all sections should be neatly handwritten and the statement of purpose should have a clear explanation as to why you would like to pursue the chosen course at LSC) clearly indicating your telephone number, fax number and email address.
Copies of relevant official educational certificates (attested by the authorised representative or notary public), recent passport size photograph and CV in the case of mature applicants, should also be enclosed.

Interview Process

As part of the application process, the college will conduct interviews with each student.

In the first instance, prospective students will be interviewed by a local Marketing Officer. The student will then be interviewed separately by a senior academic staff member to ensure their suitability for the course (Interviews will be carried out either in person, over the telephone, with Skype or with other verbal communication methods, where necessary).

Please Note: Receipt of application does not automatically guarantee a place on an LSC course. LSC reserves the right to decline the offer of a place if the candidate does not meet specified requirements at the time of application.

Country Specific Bursaries/Scholarships

The School offers bursaries/scholarships for students from certain countries from time to time. Please contact the School for further details.

Confirmation of Acceptance of Study (CAS)

The balance of fees, after deduction of the deposit can be paid in instalments as specified in the offer letter. The first instalment will be prior to the end of the first semester examinations/assignments and will continue every semester in the same manner.

Fees will be refunded in full, if the student’s application is declined by LSC.
In the case of overseas students, because of a visa refusal, there will be an administration charge of £250, deducted when this fee refund is paid.
In the case of overseas students, once a student has obtained a visa, but does not commence the course, 1,650 of the initial deposit paid will not be refunded. Any deposits paid in excess of 1,650 may be refunded at the sole discretion of the School.
Once the student has commenced the course, fees will not be refunded.

Registration Dates

At LSC we have six intakes per year. These are in February, April, June, August, October, and November. Students are advised to apply well in advance of the course commencement date as courses tend to be oversubscribed. Adequate time should be allowed for the processing of the visa application, confirmation of accommodation and other formalities.

Student Immigration Information

Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

The UK Visas and Immigration has created an official website for visa services. This website will advise you on how you can apply for your entry clearance/student visa:
http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk

To have been accepted onto a course of study by an organisation that is on the Register of Education and Training Providers.

To be able to pay for your course, support and accommodate yourself and any dependants without working or help from public funds.
To plan to leave the United Kingdom when you complete your studies.
If you have applied to the London School of Commerce through one of our authorised agents, they will be able to give you help and advice about immigration matters and the visa application process in your country.

Our pioneering research into child sexual exploitation was named as one of the UK’s 100 best breakthroughs for its significant impact on people’s lives, as was our work on an international research project to develop the world’s first culturally aware robots.
Our ten Research Institutes (link to institutes) work to tackle the real-world problems challenges faced by our communities providing an evidence base for changes to government legislation.

Some of our more recent projects include Home Office funding to undertake work on modern slavery, the policing of cyber-harassment, and research commissioned by the Children’s Society showing the impact of excluding separated migrant children from legal aid.
Over the past three years we have worked with over 1,500 organisations, including other universities, charities, Government organisations and local businesses on areas of research and knowledge exchange generating a 49% increase in research and knowledge exchange income since 2013.

Local Community

At the University of Bedfordshire we recognise our potential to make a real impact within the communities we serve, locally, nationally and internationally. We aspire for our communities and the citizens who live and work in those communities, to thrive economically, culturally and socially.

We contribute significantly to both the financial and social regional economic growth both locally and nationally. In addition to our role as a large employer and educator, we are committed to working in partnership with our local area, boosting skills and productivity through knowledge exchange, skills provision, and expertise in research and consultancy.

University of Northampton

As one of the few universities to be ranked Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), we know that sharing knowledge, supporting creativity and striving to make a positive difference will change the future. What motivates us is the drive to help people make the changes that will transform their lives – people like you.

We are one of the youngest universities in the UK but we are already leading the way in adding value to society, which we call social impact. We have won multiple awards for our work in this area, among others, but what matters the most to us is ensuring that our students and graduates have the opportunity to make their mark on the world too. That’s why we were the first university in the UK to be named as a Changemaker Campus in 2012.

We want to break the mould of what Higher Education can be. This has led us to build a whole new University from the ground up that is designed to reflect the way that you actually learn rather than the way you are expected to learn. Waterside Campus opened in September 2018.
Perhaps you want to study for a degree to kick-start your career or take it to the next level? Maybe you’re passionate about a subject that has grabbed your interest and want to learn every detail you can? Maybe you want to change the world for the better? Our commitment to transforming lives and inspiring change is at the heart of all that we do. We want to ensure that your experience studying with us enables you to transform your life and those of others too, no matter how great or small this may be.

International Scholarship

International Scholarships
We are committed to providing opportunities and rewards to the best and brightest applicants. With this in mind, we offer generous scholarship schemes that provide merit-based financial support for International students from outside of the EU.
“The University gave me a scholarship based on my academic achievements, it was certainly a great help and one of the biggest motivations for me to come to the UK to study as I came from a low-income family. The University of Northampton has plenty of opportunities and support to encourage young people to go to university.” – Khanh, Vietnam.

Scholarship

The University of Northampton International Scholarship Scheme is a merit-based scholarship that provides up to a 30% reduction in tuition fees for every year of your study (excluding placement years). All full-time Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught courses delivered on campus fall within the scheme and you will be considered for a scholarship on the basis of your academic achievement.

You do not have to apply for this scholarship separately from your initial application and you will be informed of the outcome in your offer letter.

The International Graduate Scholarship
The International Graduate Scholarship offers a 50% fee discount to graduates of the University of Northampton who studied on campus in the UK. This scholarship is available to you if you are wishing to study a Master’s course and have achieved a second class degree from a three or four year Bachelor’s degree or a first class degree from a one-year Top Up programme. Top Up graduates with a second class degree will be eligible for 20% graduate scholarship.
You do not have to apply for this scholarship separately from your initial application and you will be informed of the outcome in your offer letter.

Government Scholarship Schemes
We are a proud participant in a number of UK and overseas government scholarship schemes. These schemes, including the Chevening Scholarship and Commonwealth Scholarship, provide opportunities for students otherwise unable to afford the full costs of an overseas education. We are listed on a variety of overseas government sponsorship lists. If you are seeking to study with us under one of these schemes, check the Ministry of Education website for your home country for eligibility criteria.

Commonwealth Scholarships
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK awards over 900 scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens each year. For further information, please visit the Commonwealth Scholarships website.

English language Requirements

The minimum English language requirements for all International and EU students are:

Bachelors degrees: IELTS 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or equivalent)
Masters degrees: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each band (or equivalent)
Postgraduate research degrees: IELTS 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each band (or equivalent)
Some courses have specific English language requirements; where this is the case, it will be shown on our Course pages.
You will not usually need to provide further evidence of English language ability if you hold a degree or postgraduate diploma taught in English or if you studied in a majority native English speaking country and are applying for a Bachelors or Masters degree.

Equivalent qualifications guidance

The minimum levels required in the most common English tests are detailed in our Comparison of English language test scores.
We consider Pre-sessional English programmes taken at other UK institutions and various qualifications from overseas, including high school level English qualifications, providing we are satisfied that the programme meets the minimum requirements, shown above.

Pre-sessional Academic English (PEP) language courses

If you do not meet these requirements, we may offer you a place with the condition that you pass the appropriate pre-sessional academic English (PEP) language course. Your offer letter will tell you the length and cost of the programme.
To join a PEP course as a Tier 4 international student, you must present an IELTS for UKVI result, sometimes referred to as a Secured English Language Test (SELT) – no other English language test is acceptable. If you are an EU student a SELT is not required, any other acceptable English test is satisfactory.

English Language Support

Even if you have the minimum level of English ability, you may feel you need additional support. We have two options:
We offer a 4-week summer programme if would like to improve your academic and study skills before you start your degree course. You will find more information on the PEP course page.
If you would like English language support once you have started your course, we offer free one-to-one tutorials to help you make the most of your studies. You can find more information on the ‘EAP Extra’ page.

Support for your studies

We provide comprehensive study support. For example:
Your academic personal tutor can offer you one-to-one advice and progress reports
You can contact our dedicated Student Support and Advice Team if anything is affecting your ability to study.
Our Educational Linguistics Team offers free academic English Language support to help develop your skills.
We provide guidance on securing a placement, which you can access as soon as you confirm your offer.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Moving away to university can be both exciting and daunting. Moving to university is probably the first time you have lived away from home, and we want to make sure that the process is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. We have a whole support network in place to make halls your home away from home.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE TEAM

Our Residential Life team are here to support you during your time in halls. In each hall there is a Senior Resident Tutor (SRT) who will be your point of contact if you ever need any help. The SRTs are current or recently-graduated students, so have all lived in halls and experienced the highs and lows of moving away from home for the first time. If you are having any trouble in your hall, you should first speak to your SRT who will be able to advise you.
